CAMEL - Curriculum Vitae


Più volte annuciato e per problemi di diversa natura (su tutti la recente scomparsa di Peter Bardens) sempre rimandato, esce finalmente il primo Dvd retrospettivo dei Camel, "Curriculum Vitae", che ripercorre tutte le tappe della trentennale carriera della band attraverso il racconto di Andy Ward, Peter Bardens, Andy Latimer e Colin Bass. Si parte proprio dagli albori, quando il trio Bardens, Latimer, Ferguson scorrazzava per i pub inglesi sotto il nome di The Brew. Poi la nascita dei Camel con l'inserimento di Andy Ward ed il sempre più crescente successo ottenuto con "Mirage" e "The Snow Goose"; ma anche i problemi legali avuti per aver scelto il noto pacchetto di sigarette come copertina proprio di "Mirage" . Come dicevo, la storia del gruppo viene illustrata sotto forma di intervista ai principali protagonisti con numerosi intermezzi di spezzoni di esibizioni dal vivo, ritagli di giornali dell'epoca ed altre chicche varie. Album dopo album l'evoluzione della carriera del gruppo prende sempre più forma: vengono spiegate le ragioni dei numerosi avvicendamenti che hanno contraddistinto ed in alcuni casi messo in crisi il futuro dei Camel (soprattutto quelle più traumatiche di Pete Bardens prima e di Andy Ward dopo per gravi problemi di alcolismo) ma anche i felicissimi inserimenti di Richard Sinclair (dai Caravan) e di Colin Bass che hanno portato linfa fresca e nuove idee. Un buon Dvd insomma, sicuramente imperdibile per i veri fans dei Camel ma non privo di alcuni difetti più o meno evidenti, fra cui l'eccessiva superficialità con cui viene sbrigata la presentazione di autentici monumenti come "Moonmadness" e la non eccelsa qualità dei filmati d'epoca che oltretutto non sembrano avere l'audio originale ma sovrapposto molto più recentemente. Il bonus footage del Dvd ci da un assaggio in anteprima di un progetto che è in cantiere ormai da tempo e che dovrebbe concretizzarsi nel 2004, ovvero la storica reunion proprio dei The Brew (Latimer, Ward, Ferguson), che nel filmato discutono allegramente dei tempi passati e poi jammano negli studi della Camel productions. Ho analizzato con attenzione ed estrema soddisfazione il loro Curriculum Vitae, per cui do parere favorevole per l'assunzione.....


"Curriculum Vitae" is the first Camel retrospective Dvd. It should have released few months before but Bardens premature dead postponed the release. Here you can find their 30 years career step by step and album by album through a long interview with Latimer, Bardens, Andy Ward and Colin Bass above all. Everything started when Bardens, Latimer and Ferguson (as The Brew) played in english pubs. Then the Camel birth with Andy Ward on drums. The great success of "Mirage" and "The Snow Goose", the bad idea to choose the cigarette pack as "Mirage" cover. It's a long tale told with a bit of nostalgia and the awareness to have created something important in music history. Sometimes the tale is interrupted by some original live excerpts (mmmh I think audio is not so original..., isn't it ??) and newspaper cuts. Then Latimer talks about Bardens and Ward departure from Camel with deep sadness: when they came out, Camel's future was seriously compromised even if Richard Sinclair (from Caravan) and Colin Bass brought new ideas and experience. The Dvd bonus footage contains an interesting section showing a new project in advance: The Brew will be together again very soon (half 2004) with a new album. Latimer, Ward and Ferguson talk about the past and then make an exciting acoustic jam. I'm looking forward to reach half 2004 !! Overall "Curriculum V." is absolutely a must have dvd for any real Camel fan, containing some imperfections and too much hurry when it presents real gems as "Moonmadness" and others albums, but anyway…I read their CV with care and I agree for their engagement....
